大颠回到灵山,招呼徒众来到山前小溪畔,以锡杖在地上画一大圆圈,进而命弟子依此尺寸向下挖。深坑挖好,大颠对众人说:“这坑叫拔木坞,闽南所化木材已从地下运到这里,众人齐心把杉木拔上来。”

灵山寺有“道迹贤踪”之称,这是指到过灵山寺的得道之人和名人贤士非常多,而其中最为脍炙人口的,就是大颠禅师和韩文公韩愈交往的故事。目前,灵山寺内还留有韩愈谒见大颠的信函碑刻,这正是这两位名人交往的见证。除了三百年信兰,大颠禅师塔也是灵山寺珍贵的文物,后人称之为“舌镜塔”。
